Letter from the Vice President of Global Affairs

UConn Global Affairs is a proud partner of the Office for Diversity and Inclusion and delighted to support this new university-wide website. Diversity, equity, inclusion and justice are core to the mission of Global Affairs. We support UConn students and visiting faculty from over 90 countries and facilitate experiential global learning in all world regions and for all members of our academic community. We are also a global leader in human rights, teaching, research and outreach. In this way, Global Affairs celebrates UConn as a diverse and multicultural living and learning environment while also promoting equity, inclusion and justice.

Global Affairs is also committed to the diversity of thought. Through our work, we provide opportunities to learn about different philosophical ideas and cultures, and to interact with people from many different parts of the world. Global Affairs enables constituents to discover who they are while also understanding and respecting others; this is a fundamental piece of justice-oriented liberal arts education. But more than that, our constituents develop a sense of agency—an awareness of what they can do with what they learn and a sense of empowerment that comes from having successfully applied their knowledge to authentic problem solving and experiential learning. Finally, we collectively develop a sense of purpose—the consciousness and intrinsic motivation to use what they learn for the greater good in the quest for a more equitable and just world.

Global Affairs is proud to be part of the University’s efforts promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. We hope that you use the resources on this new website to help you discover who you are and better understand and respect others. Learning this will empower us to make UConn a better place.

Sincerely,

Daniel Weiner, Ph.D.
Vice President for Global Affairs
